GAS TANK

Can anyone tell me what the pick up inside my gas tank is made of and what it looks like. I think the new gas has finally taken it's toll. I have an original 100 gal. tank in my 233. My engine will run fine with an intake hose from a carry on tank. How can I replace the intake that passes through the top of the tank and what would I use? Many thanks Roy Waldheger
