Do you think making the pod even with hull bottom hurts the performance? Most of the brackets here in the States are made to be a little higher and allow higher mounting of the outboards.

with 400 HP there should be no noticeable performance loss and as the boat will be used in mostly open ocean top speed wasn't really an issue. Also the pod is water tight it aids buoyancy when stopped or trolling.
