Just about finished with the rewire and other modifications. I'll post the information in about two weeks. I'm hoping to cruse at 30mph at about 2.6 to 3.0 miles to gallon.
Man she looks great! What color is that? Did you paint it yourself?
I totally rebuilt my Formula in 1980. When I bought the boat is was a very ugly stock pea soup green. I decided to gelcoat the boat rather than paint it. I can't remember the manufacturer of the gelcoat, but the color is a powder blue.
I'll never gelcoat a boat again, just too much work. I think some of the high end paints look just as good as gelcoat and probably will last as long
I'm in the market for a new engine, and you just installed one like what i'm goin to end up with, so I cant wait to see your prop size pitch and performance, i'm expecting you will use a 17 pitch stainless prop, but it would be great if you could get a 19 or 21 pitch and still swing 5600 rmp and hopefully top out over 50mph good luck and let us know.
I have a 17" Yamaha prop on the motor now but plan on testing a few props once I get her in the water. I don't know if I can swing a 19" prop but I plan on testing a Mercury Rev 17" four bladed prop after I run the Yamaha prop.
I run the boat far offshore out of San Diego and with the prevailing afternoon winds and seas, I need a good mid range power band prop for that afternoon slop going up hill. I think that a four bladed prop will be the way to go!
I Think you are correct. A 17p 4 blade should behave like a 18p or so 3 blade.
I finally finished the I/O conversion to outboard. With the stock Yamaha 17 inch prop the wide open speed was 45mph, turning 5900 RPM. This was with three guys and about 60 gallons of fuel. It was a little rough so I didn't adjust tabs or trim. I think I can pick up a couple of mph by playing with the tabs and trim.
Next, I'm going to try a 17 inch 4 blade prop. I'll post numbers on both props soon.
Update....I put on a Mercury Mirage 19" prop on my boat and the performance is great! Without playing with the tabs or trim, I ran 49mph at 6100 RPM. This was with two guys and about 60 gallons of fuel. I also bought a Mirage 17" prop and plan on using it on offshore trips loaded with 120 gallons of gas plus a 45 gallon bait tank. I'll post the results as soon as I run the test!
