Formula 233 Registry

The premier site for owners of the famous 233.

So I just picked up my '72 233 and unfortunately after putting her in, she seems to be taking on water through the transom plate (twin 165s with MR drives).  Took the drive off and thouroughly inspected all of the hoses, bellows etc and the water seems to be coming in elsewhere. (looking from inside the transom, at the bottom beneath the drive shaft).  I am thinking it could be bad transom plate gaskets?

1) Anyone have similar problems...suggestions?

2) Has anyone changed their gaskets, and can provide a procedure for removing the drive, engine and necessary parts to remove the transom plate

3) Reccomendations for the best Manual for the boat/engine/drive.

Thanks for your help!

did you check the exhaust flanges and joints?

Yes, the boat was at the marina and they had the drive off, inspected the bellows, exhaust (filled it with water and it held, no leaks) sealed between the housing and the transom, new gasket where they hydraulic lines are, shift/throttle boot...

it isnt your bungs leaking is it ?

Bungs? I went down to the boat yesterday to check on it, no water coming in (which is not uncommon also). I started up the engine to make sure the batteries were all charged up, had the motor on for maybe 5 seconds and water was coming in again. I know this lends itself to a leaky exhaust, but the mechanic said he filled the whole exahust, y-pipe to the top and nothing leaked. Could it just be sediment/seawedd or something clogging the hole temporarily until the vibration of the engine shaes it free? Also, the water continued to flow in well after the engine was off.

Hmmm sounds like a heat expansion issue of some sort you need some colored water to see exaxtly where its coming from it could be a crack on the transom plate or somthing strange like that. its deffinatly engine related thats for sure but hard to tell from not seeing it
